"The Dinky"

The original Camperdown newspaper, "The Dinky", was published from October 1943 until December 1945 by a group of Camperdown residents as a means of keeping the community informed about the Camperdown men and women in uniform serving our country during World War II as well as other happenings in our wartime community. The newspaper was available to community residents and was mailed to all Camperdowners serving in the military. The newspaper was supported by Sydney Bruce Sr, The Camperdown Mills Company President; Hagood Bruce, company Vice-president; J B Burgard, Second Baptist Church and by generous donations from community members.
Among those on the original staff were co-editors Mary Ellen McDowell and Charles Whitaker, sports editor Jamie Dill, business managers Charlie Penland Sr and Arthur Holland and chief reporter Blanche Coln. Other staff members included Mr. Mac, Ruby Lee Bridges, Margaret Poston Brown, Thelma Griffith, Babe and Ruth McDowell, James Coln, Horace Buddin, Mr. Staton, George Williams and L S Cook.

In November 2007, some 61 years after the original "Dinky" ceased publication, The Camperdown Mills Historical Society made the decision to resume publication of "The Dinky" on a quarterly basis to keep our still existent Camperdown family informed of new happenings concerning our community and to print historical articles about Camperdown's rich textile heritage.

The first issue of the new "Dinky" was mailed in mid-December 2007 and consisted of eight pages. As a result of much interest and enthusiasm from our community, the next issue which will go into the mail on April 10, 2008 will be eighteen pages in length.

"The Dinky" is distributed free to the members of The Camperdown Mills Historical Society.
